Every once in a while a really intriguing boar shows up at a national show. In general, these boars have been discussed, cussed, admired or admonished by those in attendance. Often times breeders are heard to say, “Im not ready to buy him; but, boy would I like to breed a few sows to him.”

Surely INTRIGUE fits into this category. Although not perfect, he was easily the most far reaching breeding piece at the 1994 Duroc Summer Conference. One only had to take a quick look down his long, level, lean and very expressive top to verify that his 0.55 backfat at 335 lb and 8.25 loin eye scan were real. Combine this explosive top muscle with a long, extra thick rump and a thick, very expressive ham and there is no question about the superior lean content of INTRIGUE.

INTRIGUE also was one of the biggest framed, rawest made, heaviest structured boars at the Conference. When you study his pedigree, INTRIGUE was no accident. His sire was selected by the Farrand family because of his 7.00 loin scan and tremendous top and butt muscle. The Freeway, Radical, Monkey, Tool Box and Pete in his pedigree all spell big hogs with muscle. In the livestock industry the most rapid change has always been made by using extremes.

The purebred swine seedstock industry is at a crossroad. Certainly, they have the vast genetic base and the tools available through STAGES to compete with the large breeding companies. However, to be successful as a terminal sire breed in the hog production of the future, Duroc breeders will have to identify and properly use some of the most extreme genetics in terms of muscle and leanness to increase cutability while still maintaining the superior Duroc performance and muscle quality.
